The second group of saints with a seemingly obvious appeal to the military orders were military men and soldiers. (...Yet) the only military saint who inspired widespread devotion among the knights was Saint George. His relics could be found at the Templar grand priory of Auvergne in 1292, while his arm and iron from his lance were recorded at the Hospitaller site at Moures on Cyprus between 1418 and 1420 by a visiting pilgrim from Gascony. (...) Saint George never seems to have attracted as much interest as the female martyrs. (...)

At their European preceptories, relics could generally be found in conventual chapels, and this raises the question of where and how they were displayed. Most chapels were simple structures; but others, particularly the wealthier possessions of the Templars and the Hospitallers, had distinctive layouts, with a central rotunda, an encircling aisle (...) This particular plan form was typologically inspired by the fourth-century Anastasis rotunda of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, which has a long history of artistic representation and architectural mimesis. The Templar rule hints that the round nave could have served as seating for the congregation attending Mass, with the chancel being reserved for chaplains. It is also possible that the space was used for reception ceremonies, and the layout would be well suited to the exhibition of relics in the center of the rotunda. From the very start, the Templars were organized as a strict religious and military order. In the half of the 12 th century, the rules of the order were created, containing 72 clauses. The clauses were written by Saint Bernard de Clairvaux and outlined the formal structure of the order as well as its rules and prohibitions that had to be strictly adhered to. The most important rules included common meals, prohibition of bodily pleasures, attendance of religious service and an unfailing obedience to the Grand Master. New recruits came to the Templars from all western Europe. The main motivation was support of the Holy War, but also the search for redemption from one’s sin, the possibility to fight and become famous, or simply a source of food. The Order was divided into three main ranks: the noble knights, the sergeants and the chaplains.
The rank of each member determined what type of Templar Armor he will wear. The noble knights were heavy cavalry and wore a white cloak or mantle with a red cross. They were equipped with a chainmail armor or ordinary metal breast plates. The usual armor also included chainmail leggings and a great helm with a narrow visor. In fights, the Templars used primarily one-handed Templar swords and a black and white Templar Shield. The knights also received a horse armor. The sergeants, who were further divided into infantry soldiers and supporters of the Knights, had a simpler armor. They wore a tabard and black Templar overcoat that also featured the red Templar cross, just like the knights’ cloak. The chainmail armor
was somewhat shorter, and the helm was more open and practical for ground combat. The Templar weapons for the infantry and close combat included one-handed swords or lances. Assistants to the Knights were dressed in brown monk robes. The origins and evolution of Knights Templar attire reflect the unique blend of practicality, symbolism, and craftsmanship that defined this legendary Order. From their humble beginnings as a monastic order to their rise as formidable warriors, the Templars' clothing played a crucial role in their identity and mission.

Knight Templar Horses
The main battle horse used by the Knights was called a Destrier, commonly known as the War Horse. Used by Knights for charging the Muslin lines and for jousting in tournaments. Usually, stallions they were bred and raised specifically for biting and kicking.

At the time, this made the Templars something of a puzzle. How could someone be both a pious monk and a ferocious warrior? The Templars themselves tried to address this question in their symbols, which proved as puzzling as the order itself.
One of the Templars’ more enigmatic symbols was their wax seal – two knights riding a single horse. In the Middle Ages, people used seals to protect important communications from forgery, acting like a signature. Everyone from individuals to organizations had their own unique seal.

While the images on seals could be relatively simple and straightforward, they sometimes conveyed more subtle messages. The message of the Templars’ seal has always been open to interpretation.
The most popular ties the shared steed to the Templars’ vow of poverty. While the Order was not literally financially constrained, the symbol likely was meant to demonstrate that the Templars took the vow seriously.

Another draws a connection to the Gospel of Matthew, where one figure represents a knight and the other Jesus Christ. This interpretation stems from a Bible passage where Christ says, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I with them.” The idea is that the two knights on a single horse embody the ever-present companionship of Christ with the Templars who had gathered in his name.
Some propose that the two knights represent a duality within the order itself. The single horse could signify the unification of their seemingly contrasting roles as warrior-monk.
As an interesting note , the seal’s inscription adds another layer of intrigue. Originally, the inscription read “Sigillum Militum Christi” – Latin for “Seal of the Soldiers of Christ.” In the mid-13th century, the order’s 19th grand master changed the inscription to “Sigillum Militum Xpisti,” replacing the Latin word for Christ with the Greek. Some scholars argue that using the Greek letters “XP” instead of the Latin “CHR” was intended to invoke Emperor Constantine’s vision at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 C.E. His victory allowed him to end the official persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire.
While the exact meaning of the seal remains a riddle, there is little doubt it served as a powerful symbol of the knights’ commitment to their ideals.
For some, it represents Christian soldiery and unwavering brotherhood. For others, it evokes the enigmatic nature of the Templars.
The seal serves as a window into the Knights Templar’s identity and impact on medieval Christian history. It is a symbol likely to continue to spark curiosity for centuries to come.
