Battle of Arsuf – 7 September 1191

Battle of Arsuf – 7 September 1191
For hours, the Crusader army marched south along the coast.
Richard the Lionheart kept his forces in tight formation.
Infantry in the center.
Knights restrained.
No reckless charges.
On the hills and flanks, Saladin’s cavalry circled like wolves.
Arrows fell without pause.
The rearguard — held by the Hospitallers — took the worst of it.
Horses were bleeding.
Shields splintered.
Men were falling behind.
They begged to charge.
Richard refused.
He knew that if his cavalry broke formation too early, Saladin would surround and destroy them.
The discipline held.
Until it almost didn’t.
Under unbearable pressure, the Hospitaller knights finally surged forward — whether ordered or not remains debated by chroniclers.
The Templars followed.
Heavy cavalry thundered across the sand.
Lances lowered.
Hooves shaking the ground.
The sudden shock shattered Saladin’s forward elements.
The harassment stopped.
The line stabilized.
And what had been a slow bleed turned into a decisive victory.
At Arsuf, discipline nearly failed.
But when steel finally moved —
It moved like a wall."
