The Lord gave a command to his chosen people at Mount Sinai, a command that called for a state of being rather than action: “You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy,” Leviticus 19:2. As a child of the holy God, we must not slip into old habits, our old way of treating others, our old attitudes. Instead, “think clearly and exercise self-control.” Either task can be difficult, but we don’t have to do this using only our own strength. The Holy Spirit will help us be mentally alert and exercise discipline in areas where we struggle. In that way, we can show to a lost world the blessings of holy living.
